Most chihuahua clubs will list members that are a breeder or list the local rescue.
Buy purebred animals from reputable breeders. Beware of pet shops, puppy mills, and middlemen, who sell dogs for profit and care little for the health or purity of the breed. Such people don’t care about the animals and cannot be called responsible breeders. In puppy mills the animals live in poor conditions and develop various diseases. The best way to buy a puppy is to visit the kennel yourself. You can identify a conscientious breeder by his or her desire to learn as much as possible about you and your family to make sure the dog will be all right in its new home.

To promote interest in and to encourage the breeding and exhibiting of these dogs there exist many organizations in the USA and all over the world. They are aimed at maintaining a high standard of the breed and assisting members to cooperate. All breeders should abide to the code of ethic and try to raise only high-quality dogs free of genetic disorders. Such breeders will never sell their dogs to pet shops and dealers, but to final owners only, because they care about the well-being of the animals.
