There is little certainty about their origin. Most probably, the ancient Techichi dog was crossbred with some small dog brought along by Chinese immigrants. It was not until the 19th century that the dog we know today as this one gained popularity in Europe. These little dogs thrive on attention and enjoy human company very much. They are ideal lap animals suitable for an apartment lifestyle. The smallest of these dogs may be under 1 lbs and the largest up to 6 lbs.

Many people are misled by some names often attached to this breed, such as pocket-size, miniature and others. There is no definition based on size within this breed, the only difference taken into account is the length of the dog’s coat. Very small individuals occur sometimes among these dogs, like in any species, but they cannot be called a separate type. In one litter the puppies of different size are possible.
