These dogs are usually healthy and long-lived, life span averaging 15-17 years. They rarely have genetic diseases and retain their stamina and energy well into adulthood. This breed is famous for its portable size and easy maintenance, and it makes a perfect companion for an elderly person. These dogs have delicate bones and can be prone to dislocations and fractures. They make excellent watchdogs, and they are usually suspicious of strangers and other dogs.

This is a problem for these dogs, because females due to their small size have complications during the pregnancy and giving birth. Whelping can be very difficult and sometimes results in the death of mother or puppies. Newborn puppies are very fragile. Only reputable and experienced kennels are able to raise the puppies of this breed, but even with the best care the mortality rate among them is as high as 30% per litter. The female often rejects her babies or just is very weak to care for them.
